Over the past decade Schalk has collected hundreds of photographs of California foothills, buttes in New Mexico, the subtropical landscape of Okinawa, Japan, and the moraines of her home states of Iowa and Wisconsin. The process of taking these images, as well as living in diverse geographic and geologic regions has provided Schalk a wide variety of natural imagery -- colors, textures, and shapes that can be endlessly reconfigured in her mind and on the painting panel's surface. 'Poetry of place' -- a personal philosophy that grounds this body of work -- examines the relationships that exist between humans and the land. In these paintings, she strives to record memories of place (i.e. past homes) with increased sensitivity to the natural and manmade materials she uses, hoping to bring about harmony between both.
