For the past 20 years, the Pantone Color Institute, a globally recognized business unit within Pantone that forecasts universal color trends and provides color consulting services to companies of all different industries, has chosen an official Color of the Year. In December 2019, the Institute announced Classic Blue, Pantone 19-4052 TCX, as the Color of the Year for 2020 based on its “sense of peace and tranquillity to the human spirit.”
In discussing the rationale behind selecting this color, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute Leatrice Eiseman stated: “We are living in a time that requires trust and faith. It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by Pantone 19-4052 Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on. Imbued with a deep resonance, Classic Blue provides an anchoring foundation.” Ironically, this ‘anchoring foundation’ of Classic Blue became increasingly sought after throughout the many trying months of 2020. As this unprecedented year draws to an end, we continue to look to those around us for that same reliability and trust.
Our second exhibition, Classic Blue: Shades of Peace and Tranquility, features 21 artists and works that are rendered in varying hues of Classic Blue. Regardless of their particular medium, all of the pieces featured within the exhibition embody the traits of the 2020 Pantone: trustworthiness, constancy, peace, and tranquility. In doing so, this online show, much like the chosen Color of the Year, serves as a place of resilience, centeredness, and rest as we wind 2020 to a close.
