Sea Goddess is an original abstract painting that uses color and form to convey a range of strong emotions over time. Opaque splashes of paint are offset by transparent diffused shapes to create a dynamic composition filled with surprises. The sharp edges of paint splatters create high visual impact that parallel the mysterious forces of nature at work in the vast oceans. To contrast the turbulent areas, the edges and corners are carefully touched up with a fine brush and a steady hand.

Bio/ Statement

"My painting style reflects a personal journey; it continues to evolve as I discover more about my hybrid Chinese-Canadian-American identity. Being a dual citizen has propelled me to navigate through polarizing cultural shifts of perspectives and values. In the space in between, parts are destroyed and recombined in order to reveal the complex workings of my inner psyche. Inspired by the Action Painters of the 1960s, the physical act of painting plays a central role in the process of creating my work. Using my body as a tool, in addition to squeegees, sponges, ladles, mops, and brushes, an instinctive drive is channeled into the process of creation. Sometimes the process begins with saturating the surface in vast amounts of water before dropping paint. Other times, paint is flung directly onto the surface, creating splashy shapes that express a burst of joy in the moment of creation. Manifested through big energetic gestures, I allow the physics of gravity to enact on thinned paint as long fluid drips run its natural course. Each breath connects with movement and layer by layer, a complex textured surface begins to accumulate. As parts are obscured, new forms and surprises come to the foreground. I use a diverse approach that often integrates paint with physical objects once situated in the surrounding environment. Driven by impulse and intuition, I embrace ephemerality as a crucial element in much of my artwork—especially the more improvisational and spontaneous pieces. Along the voyage of creation, various elements are found by embracing chance while others are premeditated."
