“I am a painter, primarily working in oils. My pieces are typically figurative or representational. Much of my current work utilizes reclaimed library books as the support rather than canvas. I am an academic librarian, and using books this way allows me to bring in themes of information and knowledge to my work as well as the occasional found word poetry. The books were being ‘deselected’ and were headed to the dumpster. I chose a number of books to repurpose this way and I am bound to what is available. I create studies in acrylic on paper to see the interplay of the subject and the books, rearranging them many times before coming to a final form. The paintings themselves are women whose facial expressions or body language imply discomfort, anxiety, or other difficult emotions. The interplay of the books and the emotion is where the viewer derive their meaning.”
