“Holding an MFA in Art from San Francisco State University, I received the Graduate Student Award for Distinguished Achievement and the Cadogan Contemporary Art Award among others. I have exhibited my work in SFAC, SOMArts, 500 Capp Street, ICASF, Southern Exposure, Root Division, and more. My artistic practice is a journey through the intricate layers of identity, weaving together the threads of space, tradition, and migration. Through a diverse range of mediums including drawing, painting, fiber, and textiles, my artistic inquiry unravels the knotty narratives of displacement and belonging. Inspired by the rich heritage of Persian art of tapestry and the profound symbolism of weaving traditions across cultures, my work explores the implications of human covering, particularly within the context of gender oppression, notably affecting women in the Islamic world. Drawing from the historical significance of weaving as a cornerstone of women's labor and artistic expression, I navigate the labyrinth of cultural identity. My approach is rooted in a diasporic perspective, driving me to deconstruct and reimagine cultural elements within the global tapestry of human experience. With a commitment to avoiding stereotypes, I strive to re-contextualize traditional aesthetics, infusing them with new meaning and relevance in our interconnected world. Central to my practice is the exploration of juxtapositions – between traditional and unconventional materials, familiar and enigmatic shapes, and the fusion of past and present narratives. Through this process, I aim to provoke contemplation, evoke emotion, and inspire dialogue, inviting viewers to reflect on the fluidity and complexity of cultural identity.”
