Artist Biography:
Currently residing in Atlanta, GA, Robert previously had a career in Experiential Marketing, traveling across the country to direct promotional marketing campaigns at sports and music events. He currently spearheads a non-profit foundation while also dedicating his time to fine art photography. Robert developed a passion for photography by joining his father on trips across the world to photograph landscapes and wildlife. His passion has grown through the years as he’s attended professional classes and workshops in fine art photography through the NPPE Mentor Program.
Robert’s work represents a vision of natural elements through the abstract, showcasing painterly scenes that have a sense of energy as they move through the image. His approach accentuates the brush strokes present in nature and uncovers mysteries within elements that are not immediately apparent. His work focuses on the beauty within turbulence, revealing shapes and colors that generate strong emotions. Inspired by Alfred Stieglitz’s Equivalents,
Robert seeks ways to simplify scenes to their abstract qualities to convey a sense of wonder.
Artist Statement:
During my exploration of rivers in Georgia, I was drawn to segments where the water’s motion transitioned from dark mystery into brilliant white water. As I photographed these segments, I began to hear a harmony as the smooth water acted as musical strings, flowing together in tranquil notes. The river’s harmonies were background instrumentals to the chorus of the sun’s soft light flickering across the fast-paced white water. The music continued into a crescendo of white water crashing against the hidden rock protrusions, delivering a peak volume to the river songs.
The combination of visual and audio elements resonated with me in ways that are best illustrated in the abstract. I grew up close to rivers and streams, and one of my lifelong passions has been exploring music in all its forms. I seek out a diverse range of genres because their differences stir a variety of emotions in me. This passion for music is similar to when I view an abstract painting, since abstraction engages my emotions free of specific representation. I began to see the relationship of flowing water as resembling painterly brush strokes, and the interplay of light and shadows provided a sense of mysterious serenity. As the water rippled, I felt a subtle chaos in the contrast between the smooth water and the brighter whites. These feelings mirrored the contemplation one experiences with abstract art.
Through these images, I am diving into a deeper meaning behind the attraction to the natural movements of water. By photographing the motion of streams with slow shutter speeds, I accentuate nature's own brush strokes and colored reflections in the abstract to invoke feelings that are distinct from traditional representations of rivers. My goal with these works is to highlight the undercurrents of beauty in small ripples we often overlook.
