Ken Beerbohm owned and managed a custom modeling and plastics shop beginning in his basement in 1974, then subsequently to three increasingly larger locations to accommodate his successful business, serving the needs of the growing tech/electronic and medical industries taking off in the Silicon Valley area of Northern California. He developed a reputation for principled and skillful work during his 33 years of business. Upon retirement he turned his attention to his true passion of sculpting, bringing all the experience he had, working with a variety of tools and materials while in the plastics industry. His fascination with the animal world with an impulse to imbue their actions with a sense of humor has been the driving force behind most of his creations. He has been invited to close to 30 juried shows in just the past two years, has had two solo shows and three duo shows. He approaches his work as a vocation, something he is called to do to uplift the spirits of others.
My respect for nature has its roots in my early life, growing up in a small town in Montana where the mountain behind our house became a giant playground full of nature's wonders from moss covered rocks to spring creeks. I've devoted my retirement years to sculpting mostly birds both in their natural environment as well as in unexpected postures so as to stretch the viewer's imagination and join me in my quest to perpetuate the kinship we share with nature's tiniest to towering creatures. I draw great satisfaction in working with mixed media, natural wood combined with clay, wire mesh, steel rods, aluminum and foam to form my creations and I draw pride when an onlooker stops with a look that asks "how did he do that"? Just a nod, a smile or a laugh affirms for me that my efforts fostered the desired effect.
