Marsha Gray Carrington has been making things ever since she can remember. Being an artist was never really something she considered a choice but something she just was. Marsha received her BFA from James Madison University in 1977 with concentrations in painting, drawing and photography, and an MFA from California Institute of the Arts in 1981 in fine art photography. Marsha worked in Visual Effects Animation from 1983 to 1996 on films such as Ghost, Braveheart, and Hocus Pocus, with her last stint being at Disney Studios. She left film to follow a dream of illustrating children’s books, and has illustrated seven books that include Jake Johnson, The Story of a Mule, Tessa’s Tip-Tapping Toes, and Coriander The Contrary Hen. Today, Marsha maintains a working studio behind her home which is her favorite playground, where she concentrates creatively on abstract painting and photographic creations.
I make things, whether through painting, drawing, photography or mixed media. With digital photography, my camera and computer are my paint brush. I take the original photographs, then in Photoshop I build and manipulate my images to create the final image. It is a dreamlike journey as the image reveals itself to me as I go, and I become lost in these surreal, fantastical worlds.
