Artist Biography:
Michael Richard is a contemporary photographer and visual artist born in San Diego, CA in 1962, the youngest of four children. From a young age he showed a keen interest in the arts, often immersing himself in drawing, painting and photography. Being the son of a Navy veteran and a Navy veteran himself he had the opportunity to travel the world and lived in numerous places. Michael developed a passion for photography after being surrounded by the natural beauty of the places he visited and lived. He also gained an appreciation of the urban landscapes while living and growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area in Oakland, California.
Michael began taking photographs and developing them in 1978 during his high school years. His art and photography teachers often encouraged him to pursue his passion and told him that he had the “eye” for photography. While attending Cal State Hayward University, one of his photos was selected for display at the university’s museum for Most Outstanding and Creative photograph. Michael also took photographs for numerous musical artists, such as Rick James, DeBarge, Parliament and Bobby Nunn.
After college Michael joined the United States Navy and served as an Electronic Technician. He was honorably discharged in 1988. While serving his country he travelled the world taking photographs of different countries and people. Michael returned to Oakland, California, joined the workforce and retired in 2016.
After receiving an instruction from God to take photographs of Maui sunsets for one year, he and his wife moved to Lahaina, Hawaii on the island Maui. All photos taken are natural and unedited. After completing the assignment, he and his wife and I relocated to San Diego, California where we currently reside. Their place of new beginnings.
Artist Statement:
It has always been a dream of mine to be a photographer since childhood. I thank God for the gift He provided me. The ability of seeing what others may not see and the skill to be able to capture the natural splendor of His creations. My photos have not been edited. I believe editing takes away from the splendor, natural beauty, and the true essence of God's intent.
My photography is rooted in a blend of determination and intentionality. My inspiration is found in my love for natural beauty and the desire to share it with those who would otherwise never have the opportunity to see.
Maui sunsets are known for their breathtaking beauty and vibrant colors. The majesty of these sunsets lies in their ability to evoke strong emotions, remind us of the fleeting nature of time and the importance of cherishing every moment we have. Also, I hope that my work will inspire others to reflect on past experiences, appreciate the present, and strive for a better future.
My goal is that my photography will inspire others to explore and seek out new experiences, to challenge themselves and to embrace the unknown, being reminded that there is always something worth striving for and that life is full of possibilities.
