Artist Personal Statement
I’m Damien Olmeda, a street photographer from San Diego, California. My passion lies in capturing candid, authentic moments that reveal the unseen stories and rhythms of urban life. Photography, for me, is about discovery—finding beauty in the unplanned and sharing moments that might otherwise be overlooked.

I didn’t start my journey with formal training; instead, I grew into photography through curiosity and a desire to tell visual stories. Over time, I found my voice in the interplay of light and shadow, particularly in black-and-white imagery, where emotions and depth come to life without the distraction of color. Each frame I take holds a narrative that I hope resonates with those who view it, inviting them to step into the scene and interpret it through their own experiences.

I have been fortunate to learn from respected photographers, including private workshops with Phil Penman, whose mastery of capturing city life inspired me to refine my approach and stay true to the unfiltered essence of street photography. Throughout this journey, I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support of my wife, Diana, whose encouragement has pushed me to explore new creative boundaries and embrace my passion more fully.

My work has been showcased in galleries and art walks, and I’m honored to share my perspective with others. This path continues to evolve, with an upcoming project in India with Leica Australia alongside Stephen Dupont and Russel Shakespeare, further fueling my growth as a storyteller.

Each image I create is a chance to capture something real and unrepeatable. I hope my work sparks reflection and connection, reminding us of the powerful moments that make up our shared human experience.
